Black-capped Vireo

Brush clearing, overgrazing and fire suppression led to the loss of nesting cover needed by the black-capped vireo. As a result, the US Fish and Wildlife Service declared the bird endangered in 1987. Protections for the bird triggered controversial limits on suburban development near Austin and San Antonio.
