Mike Tewes, a leading wild cat researcher at Texas A&M University in Kingsville, has studied ocelots since the early 1980s. He believes that the decline of this rare cat in its last Texas stronghold in the Lower Rio Grande Valley is due to habitat loss that followed the construction of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway, State Highway 77, and the Brownsville Ship Channel.
