See Full Interview TranscriptMark Kirkpatrick works as a population geneticist and professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Texas at Austin. As a volunteer, in 1992, he helped file a petition with Barbara Mahler and the Save Our Springs Alliance to list the Barton Springs salamander as federally endangered. Here, he tells the story of the 5-year series of delays that ensued, with efforts by Governor Bush, Senator Hutchison, Secretary of the Interior Babbitt, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission to avoid and postpone the listing.
