American Black Bear

Nathan Garner, a wildlife biologist and former administrator for Texas Parks and Wildlife, has studied black bears since the 1980s, and was active in starting and running the East Texas Black Bear Task Force. Here he describes the reaons behind the decline of bears in East Texas from great abundance in the 1800s to extirpation around 1940.
