Alexander “Sasha” Karatayev is a professor and the director of the Great Lakes Center, a research foundation of SUNY in Buffalo, New York. He previously worked as a professor at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, and did extensive surveying and research on the Texas hornshell, a rare mollusk native to the Big Bend basin.
